The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has commended the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for his proactive approach to addressing the proposed Tax Reform Bill. By halting the bill’s processes and public hearings to allow for deeper consultations with the Attorney General of the Federation and other key stakeholders, Senator Jibrin has showcased a commitment to fairness and inclusivity in shaping Nigeria’s fiscal policies.
The NDYC recognized this intervention as a significant step toward ensuring that tax reforms serve the collective interests of all Nigerians. The organization urged the Senate Committee to prioritize equity and justice in their deliberations, ensuring that no region or demographic is marginalized. The NDYC stressed the importance of designing reforms that guarantee every Nigerian benefits equitably from the nation’s wealth and resources, regardless of their background or location.
In its statement, the NDYC also called for the revival of the Warri and Calabar Ports, citing their potential to reduce haulage costs, stimulate local economies, and support regional development. The Congress emphasized the strategic importance of these ports, particularly the Warri Port, which boasts self-sustaining cargo generation and efficient turnaround times. It urged Senator Heineken Lokpobiri and other committee members to prioritize these revitalization efforts for balanced national growth.
Additionally, the NDYC appealed to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) to institute consultative frameworks within their states. Such efforts would foster grassroots participation, enhance transparency, and ensure inclusiveness in the tax reform process.
