Niger Delta Youth Congress Cautions Against Undue Interference in INEC

Share

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has praised the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for his decisive leadership in handling the proposed Tax Reform Bill. By suspending the bill’s processes and public hearings to allow for consultations with the Attorney General of the Federation and other stakeholders, Senator Jibrin has demonstrated a commendable commitment to transparency and fairness in legislative proceedings.

The NDYC acknowledged this move as a crucial step in ensuring that tax reforms are inclusive and equitable, benefiting all Nigerians without discrimination. It emphasized the need for the Senate Committee to focus on delivering a resolution that reflects justice and fairness, ensuring that every region and demographic receives an equitable share of the nation’s wealth and opportunities.

The Congress also called for urgent action on the revitalization of the Warri and Calabar Ports, urging the Senate Committee to prioritize these projects. Highlighting the strategic importance of these ports, the NDYC noted their potential to reduce haulage costs, create employment, and stimulate economic growth in the South-South region and beyond. The unique capabilities of the Warri Port, such as efficient vessel turnaround and sustainable cargo generation, were particularly emphasized.

Furthermore, the NDYC appealed to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) to establish inclusive consultative frameworks to engage citizens and stakeholders in the tax reform process. By fostering grassroots participation, the reforms can reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians. The NDYC expressed confidence in the Senate’s ability to deliver a reform outcome that embodies equity, justice, and national interest.
